I was able to purchase several thousand Cheddite 209 primers and several thousand Federal 209A primers. I am trying to determine the primary difference between the 2 (if any).

    Any help will be appreciated.

By checking the powder manufacturers websites you’ll be able to see the differences in pressure and velocity. Pick the powder, wad, & hull to get the most recent data.

always remember, (A) means alloy. any time you see A on a primer pack, it means alloy is mixed in the nitro to make it burn hot. hot usually means (for hotter loads and heavier payloads.) hope it helps.

The main difference between Cheddite 209 primers and Federal 209A primers is in their power and sensitivity.

Cheddite 209 primers are typically less powerful than Federal 209A primers and have a lower sensitivity. This means that they may require a slightly stronger hammer strike to ignite the primer and may be less likely to ignite in cold weather or in guns with weaker firing pins.

Federal 209A primers, on the other hand, are known for their high power and sensitivity. They are designed to provide a consistent and reliable ignition, even in cold weather or in guns with weaker firing pins.

In general, Federal 209A primers are considered to be a better choice for use in shotguns with heavy loads or in extreme weather conditions, while Cheddite 209 primers may be a good choice for lighter loads or in guns with stronger firing pins.

It's important to note that the choice of primer can have a significant impact on the performance of your shotgun, so it's always a good idea to consult with an experienced shooter or reloading expert before making a final decision.
