Hello! Just looking to see what's out there. My son (8th grade) shoots a bt99 that belongs to the trap team, he shoots it well but we don't have access to it out of season. We have a kolar max lite for sporting, i was thinking maybe he could try a top single barrel to see if he can get similar results. If you have something you're not using please shoot me a pm. Looking for a 34". Thank you!
Assuming you have a fixed rib, it's going to be tricky to find one that won't require raising the comb to work. None of the adjustable rib top single barrels will work without jacking the comb up a ton, potentially requiring you to change comb posts too, and resulting in excessive drop at heel. If you have a flat rib you're completely outta luck, you WILL have to raise the comb to use any single barrel. If you have the ramp rib, you can probably get away with one of the old TC low step rib barrels, but even then it's a roll of the dice. If you have the adjustable rib sporter, it's going to get even more complicated, as the only top single that matches that rib is the Low Profile and they are exceptionally uncommon. I don't think any other single matches up to that rib, you'd have to get a fixed rib single barrel and then put an add-on rib to match. You're also going to have to have a gunsmith fit the barrel to your gun. By the time you're done, you're looking at $3-4k total minimum. Chances are the BT he shoots is fairly flat shooting. Put a 1/8" spacer in the comb of his sporter and have him try that for trap, chances are it'll work just fine.
Thank you for the reply, very helpful! The comb is adjustable, hoping that would help, and the bt he currently uses has a pretty low rib, especially for a trap gun. The o/u is a little heavy for him still after a couple rounds, thinking a top single could also help shed a little weight. Thanks again!
It probably won't save much weight if any, the older barrels had heavier monoblocks and barrel tubes. 750 bore might not be too bad, but reasonable chance an old 740 bore single barrel won't be that much different than a max lite o/u set. Bottom line, you're pretty much looking for a goldilocks barrel to accomplish what you're hoping for, and even then, most likely diminishing returns. If he likes the BT, you're going to better off just buying one for 1/3-1/4 of what you'll have into a barrel for the Kolar.
Thank you! The new bt I priced with gracoil and adjustable comb was around $5k, and I've seen used kolar top single barrels for $1700 to $2600 over the past few years, figured it was worth a shot. Thanks again!
