There are reports from legitimate alternative news sources that the BATF reports the bullet was not from a 30.06.

My son says he thinks he had on a steel vest that deflected the shot up into his neck after it busted up the bullet. My boy is a vet from both the Air Force and the army airborne and has combat experience from Afganistan. He has seen a lot of gun shot wounds from his time in combat rescue. Hr says that hard steel body armor is cheaper but will deflect bullets and that's what he thinks happened. He thinks Kirk's people used cheaper steel rather than ceramic plats like he wore in the AF and Air Borne because of cost and they don't want to admit that that is what killed him but he's not 100% on that just what he sees from watching the Video.

I've shot and seen a lot of deer shot with high powered rifles over the years. I once shot a large sika stag 2 times with a 300 win mag 180 grain nosler partitions in the back side from 200 yards and neither came out so I've seen bullets do strange things but I'd think the back bone of a man wouldn't stop a 30-06 from exiting. That's what I know and think but I never trust the government on anything they do or say so there is that too.
