Shot Flyers (Pigeons) Live Birds? No HOF for you!?

Will HOF members that shot live birds be removed from their “Forever Enshrinement”? Live bird shooting is not popular by the mainstream establishments. It is even illegal in most states.

Ohio has added a post enshrinement morals standard. Word is they have removed a member that was forever enshrined. I don’t think that guy ever shot at a live pigeon shoot. Or did he?

I expect the HOF questionnaire to include “did you ever participate in a Flyers event”? And maybe if you did could you please list the other competitors.

I expect this will save room for more deserved HOFers.

I know I won’t make it now. Sucks to be me.

There are no pigeon shooters in the OSTA Hall of Fame. There never will be. Please check the PSSA HOF for Skeletons.

Jim/Canton, You must live down stream from the East Palestine chem spill to think that there are NO Ohio HOF bird shooters, or in Pa, or in the National Trap Shooting HOF. I'd like to see the list that didn't shoot live birds. Trap Shooting was founded by live bird shooters.

The only member of the Ohio HOF that I'd say never shot live birds is Dave Berlet. I base that on the fact that on many occasions I've seen Dirk miss a pheasant sitting in a tree and Dave taught him to shoot. I've never seen Dave miss a bird in a tree but I do remember him misssing a big buck at my place from a tree. Dave claims that a 25 yard standing shot at a big buck is as hard as a four hole 55 yard trap target, that's what I think he said. Or Dave may be a member of PETA.

Dave’s picture will be lonely and dusty in the HOF by himself. Where will they find more Angels in Ohio? I don’t think this class (2023) will make the cut. Jmho.

I’m aware of at least 2 OSTA Hall of Fame members that not only shot flyers but also hosted flyer shoots at their clubs. Do those folks get removed from the HOF twice?

All of 'em including moderators need to be removed from any recognition for destroying them poor pigeons. I sorta remember doing that deed decades ago but saw the light-aka protesters (actually $12/pigeon) may have had a lot to do with it and moved on to a cheaper sport (trap). Oh well, some of us are still living in the past.

I unerstand the jest of the thread, when the idea of making retro moral judgements about an HOF member and changing the rules to justify it an organization (or country) is headed down the S-hole. Removing statues, changing army base names, going woke is not good. Trap Shooting is so far removed from what I started shooting back in 1974 that I don't and can't recomend it to any person.

If I would have been one of those that could have afforded to shoot a K-80 and piss thousand of dollars down the drain every year shooting trap, If that would have been me, I'd have just shot the rats with wings only. I never have unerstood why people with shit pots full of money do what they do.

Brad, maybe you should study those photos and see how many kids are parading around with Krieghoffs, Perazzis, Kolars and Guerinis. We were happy to have 1100's in those days as that was all we could afford. Even Leo got tired of cleaning 1100's and moved up to Berettas. That said, if old timers with big pensions and money to burn want to look good missing that's their business not ours. Plenty of 'em are stuck on the 27 yd line breaking crappy scores but are too stubborn to move forward-(another reason for the 30 yd. line). Anyway, time to try and exit that time warp you're also stuck in.

I’m less concerned with someone who shoots live birds than someone who shoots at police helicopters.

Anyone that shot at a copter and missed should not be in any kind of HOF. That is an easy target. Miss and out I say!

pom I am not condoning or even liking what has happened, what I'm saying is that the HOF has been created to preserve the history of trapshooting. Over the course of history there has been booth good history and bad history and none of it should be disregarded. There was no provision made in the HOF's to remove anyone for any reason after they were inducted, but in very plain, direct, and absolute English language it is stated (FOREVER ENSHRINED). That was what was meant to be and it needs to be preserved in that manner to have a HOF. This person's trapshooting records and achievements did not change after his induction.

How ironic, the word "removed" associated with your name. Sounds like a pretty good idea to me. Your attempt at humor is sophomoric. I know why you do it, you always have. That's why you put "including moderators" in your post. Then when it backfires you end up looking silly and usually have to admit you were wrong and or apologize for shooting off your mouth. Thinking that posting some more of your drivel about how you know better than everyone is not only getting old, but also really quite boring.

You "sorta" remember? I can understand that part. If I wasn't any good at it, I probably wouldn't remember it either. Just because some members were very good at breaking targets or shooting pigeons and you weren't doesn't make you smarter, saying something like that makes it look just petty.

    HCarl,
I doubt you will find any posters on this site that would condone Randy’s actions the last few days of his life. I certainly don’t understand what happened in Randy’s mind that caused him to act the way he did. It’s not my place to sit in final judgement of him, I’ll leave that to the Almighty. Randy was duly elected to the OSTA HOF for his trapshooting accomplishments. His enshrinement honors only that, not his troubled and violent demise.

Duly elected and now duly removed. Trapshooting doesn’t need someone like him being an ambassador to the sport. If HOF members don’t like what happen I’m sure they are more than welcome to remove themselves as well…

Too bad there wasn't a statue they could tear down huh? Or perhaps a building name they could change.?

    Meatmen12,

I understand and respect your opinion. Allow me to add the following comments:

No doubt about duly elected. Duly removed is questionable. A bylaw had to be changed in order to allow his removal. There are very clear cut procedures for changing the bylaws. Are you 100% sure the procedures were followed? I know I’m not.

Was Bob Malmstedt elected in the HOF? I can't tell who is being discussed above or what they did or didn't do. But being accused of sexual assault of a 17 year old seems a little more serious than shooting a few dirty pigeons?

    LCH,
This particular discussion was centered around a recent bylaw added to the Ohio Trapshooting Hall of Fame. A member of the Ohio Trapshooting Hall of Fame was removed due to a shoot out he had with police which ended with his death. His actions were deemed immoral and he was removed the Ohio Hall of Fame. Pretty sure we would all consider shooting at the police an immoral act. The crux of this thread is what other acts will be considered immoral by our future Ohio Hall of Fame BOD members? Will hunting be considered immoral by our future board members? Drinking alcohol? Driving a vehicle that burns fossil fuels? If after induction a member of the Ohio HOF decided to move out west to legally live a polygamous lifestyle would they be considered immoral and removed? Once we go down this rabbit hole we subject our museum and history to the whims of whoever happens to be sitting on the board at any given time.

It is time to replace the board of the HOF, with unwoke members.
I never met the man removed, but his one mistake got him removed. How many of you HOF members never made a mistake?
How many of you board members never made a mistake that may come to light 20 years from now?
Well said Don Cogan. Roger C.

When a person is elected, or appointed to a position they are expected to do the job to the best of their ability. This said, I believe that some don't realize that they need to be a responsible member, probably some just want to be seen as someone of importance and don't care, some are two faced and tell whoever they are dealing with at the moment whatever they want to hear, and some only want to be in the position to use it as a stepping stone to fulfil their dream to become the owner of a very high dollar trap gun. A few take the challenge seriously and do their very best and work very diligently to make the OSTA board and shoots and the HOF the best they can be. To these folks we as shooters owe them a lot and we need to show them our appreciation. To the others shame on you.
