Top trap shooter accused of sexually assaulting young girl at Pa. shooting grounds


ELYSBURG - A nationally-recognized trap shooter has been accused of sexually assaulting a girl he had chosen as his protege over the course eight years in Northumberland County.

Robert W. Malmstedt, 63, Somerville, New Jersey, was arraigned Tuesday on charges of sexual assault by a sports official, unlawful contact with a minor corruption of minors, indecent assault and harassment.

The girl, 17, told Ralpho Twp. police the sexual encounters began when she was nine at locations including a camper on the Pennsylvania State Shotgunning Association grounds near Elysburg.

The police investigation began last October when the girl’s father reported she had been fondled and groped at one of four shoots held in the summer of 2021 by the state association.

He told police while looking through her daughter’s cell phone he discovered provocative messages to and from Malmstedt and pictures she had sent to him in her bra and underwear.

When interviewed in February, Malmstedt told police he was once a top trap shooter and had been a mentor, coach and father figure for the girl, the arrest affidavit states.

He admitted making out with the girl in the summer of 2021, claimed it was consensual, it lasted less than a minute and he apologized to her, the document states.

He told an investigator he did not remember putting his hand inside her pants as she alleged but he was not going to call her a liar.

The following, taken from the affidavit, is a summary of April 1 police interview of the girl:

She had known Malmstedt since she was 7 because she used to walk dogs at shoots. She started shooting in 2017 and it was common practice for top shooters to select one or two juveniles to whom they would pass on their knowledge of the sport.

From May to late July last year he would invite her to his camper at the state association grounds where he would kiss and fondle her. On one occasion he placed his hand down her pants and came in contact with her vagina.

The girl told police she did not tell anyone because she was fearful of being kicked off the shooting squad and because Malmstedt had a temper.

Malmstedt spent several hours in custody before posting the $50,000 bail.

 

Accusations-not convictions. Let's wait to pass judgement.

Probably not common that 2 children in the same family were born with mental problems.
They would have to be.

When I punched in the numbers, it showed a guy from Ohio who has not shot in the last 2 years.

 

When I punched in the ATA numbers it showed he hasn’t shot for 2years also but he has some great averages when he was shooting.

One, I never said the guy didn’t exist, only that the ata page didn’t show a Randy. Nickname maybe?

Maybe you guys that know him know what name he is under on the shooters page. Really doesn’t matter to me one way or the other.

If I had a daughter, thankfully I only had sons, she never would be allowed in that situation. It's also possible to question some of the accusations since another older female was likely living in that same trailer.

Randy Wilhelm was charged w/something back in 2020. I think it was degradation in the newspaper.It appears to have been a long lawsuit. His wife was trying to force sale of the Propane business so she could get a share of it, after her divorce, Randy's father's wife is still alive and is co-owner of Wilhelm Propane. Ex wives circling like Vuttures to pick the bones.BCI building falsehood cases, those were trap loads by the thousands.

but not trapshooters.
