A recent article (Oct. 7) in the newspaper Southern Illinois quoted our fearless leader, Gypson, as saying the ATA currently has 60,000 worldwide members. He also claimed nearly 12% attend the Grand American. Something sounds a bit fishy with his numbers. Is this a prime example of New Math?

Maybe they attended the Grand and didn't shoot.

GIBSON, MUST BE A DEMOCRAT. His pants must be on fire most of the time. The people around Sparta know that is not true. Roger C.

Sparta IL must be quite a destination point for worldwide travelers.

If you thought a website that would act as a watchdog would curb the lies and corruption you were....or are a fool. Graph and gun please.

They can't even get the correct year the grand moved to BFE ......

"When the Amateur Trapshooting Association moved its signature event, The Grand American, to Sparta’s World Shooting and Recreational Complex in 2012, it just made sense to move the corporate headquarters to Randolph County as well."

But, this is the most interesting, because it opens the question of who was involved in PULL 2012 .....

"“One of the first things the executive committee told me is ‘We’re going to move our office from Vandalia to Sparta, Illinois. So, go find a place,’” he said. “I was somewhat familiar (with Sparta), but not entirely. I started looking around and found a few properties. This building here was just perfect."

Guy must be like J. Edgar Hoover. He surely has FBI files on the President and EC members to protect his chair, desk and salary. Maybe we should send him a calculator and a 2005 T-shirt.

    ata math

100 PEOPLE (20 squads) go to a weekend shoot and they ALL sign up and shoot ALL 3 events.
    200 singles, 100 caps, and 100 doubles

"Hey, how many shooters showed up at that shoot last weekend?"

We had a fantastic turn out, 300 shooters!

Half of those 100 people brought their wives/husbands/boyfriends/girlfriends that don't shoot but went to watch.
So 350 people "attended" that shoot.

I don't know if the ata bean counters use kids in their calculations but that could get the number to 400 easy.

It appears Lynn (The Talking Head ) Gipson is not only not the brightest bulb in the box, but he must not even be in the Box as of yet ... The EC and most of the BOD do not want anyone smarter than they are and it seems like they accomplished their mission ... Knowledge and Integrity are wonderful things, the Talking Head appears to have neither ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

Someday perhaps the ATA will tell you all about the older records that were destroyed BEFORE the move to Sparta.

Having once been in the record (basement) area of the Vandalia offices, seeking some old information (records), these records were precious to one who likes history of the sport.

Today, if we need some of that info, we need to search the net.

Sad day when the ATA heads told the gals to "Get rid of those papers".

I am SURE they will be keeping these records of announcements of 60,000 members.

"It appears Lynn (The Talking Head ) Gipson is not only not the brightest bulb in the box" ..... Maybe ..... But, maybe not ..... He is getting to write his false legacy without correction ..... Someone fifty year from now can 'research' the 'Gipson years', and think it was a prosperous time for the ATA .....

Those who love and enjoy history should be outraged, that so much false information will portray someone and some things as things that they were not .....

This 40,000 member jump most likely is due to high numbers in Mississippi. The easy yardage rules have brung 'em in. Sippi rules!

The ATA is now in Illinois, remember in Chicago dead people still vote, multiple times, so the ATA is counting some members twice and dead members 3 times.

Is there documentation of the true membership numbers over the years, since inception?

Kriegoff-80, good question. I would like to see the following ATA numbers by year from 1960 to 2018.
    • The actual number of members still living.
    • The actual number of lifetime members still living
    • The actual number of members who have shot more than 1,000 targets by year
    • The actual number of ATA targets thrown
I am not going to hold my breath waiting for the ATA to post these numbers on their website.
