According to the minutes of the ATA, scorers maybe be as young as 14 at the Grand.

I started loading on the old Winchester Traps at age 12 and began scoring by age 14.

 

I think it depends on the kid, the majority of them I think can't stay focused at that age. I know at last years Grand I had to take at least two targets away from myself because I didn't hit them , I knew I didn't hit them, but yet the scorer called a 5 for me on the post.

 

Kids in charge of adults?

 

I could name at least one 3 person squad that would be thrilled to see a 14 year old in the chair.

My question would be, with the large metropolitan population around that place in ILLnews, why do they have to get 14 year old kids?

 

Ad per the minutes, they had around $27 million. They elected to give themselves a 17k gun. I bet someone gets a bonus on this plan.

If the minor is at least 15 feet behind the firing line of the trap shooter participating in the competition, the minor can work as a scorer.

 

as long as the smart phone, ear buds, and walkmans' stay in the car..........sure.
but try betting on that.

 

Which big shoot did you score that had thousands of dollars up for grabs? Where those thousands of dollars could be decided by one target.

How many guys did you come across that tried to intimidate you? Ever have one shooters buddy say his pal hit a target that you called loss?

How many times did a shooter tell you he had a 5 when you called 4?

How many times, ESPECIALLY as the squad of "buds" was standing around your chair at the end of the round, did one of them say,

"Hey, I didn't miss that one target on station X, just ask my long-time shooting buddies, I mean my squad mates. I don't know these guys; they would never lie for me"

Yeah, let a 14-year-old girl score the GAH. The only good thing about it being that shoot in BFN, is they don't get half the numbers we used to have at VANDALIA so there is less opportunities for some pro CHEATS to run over the kid.

The shooter on 5 misses a hard right. Yeah the word hard is in italic for a reason.

The 14 year old calls LOSS, loud and clear.

The guy on 1 and the guy on 2, both friends of shooter 5 stop and tell the 14 year old,

He hit that one son, I saw a piece, it was a straight away for me (no such thing anymore) and he took a small piece off the bottom.

His buddy on 2 says,

That's right son, I saw it too, just a little piece, I can understand how you couldn't see it from back there in the chair, but he hit it, honest.

The guys on 3 and 4, also part of the same squad that shoots everywhere together, don't say anything. Just in case they need to call one for another pal that MISSED.

Does anyone actually think this 14 year old is going to call a line ref And even if he did, is the ref going to believe a 14 year old new scorer, or 2 guys that have been shooting for YEARS? And this is where the other 2 guys chime in

Yeah ref, we saw it too, he just took a small chip off the bottom.

I always wondered if these Aholes split any winnings after they scammed the system.

I am betting Lynn will get a bigger bonus for this. More profits equals more money to spend on the free gun they give each other.

This has nothing to do with the KID knowing the rules. And I doubt very much if he or she will memorize the rulebook so they can work for 10 days anyway.
Hell, 90% of the adults don't know the rules. I've seen grown men get run over by a squad of pro cheaters.

For instance, "Can I close my gun as soon as I shoot and drop another shell in the chamber?"
I would like to have a dollar for every nit-wit that said I couldn't.

If that place is so hard up to get help they have to hire "babies", they should just tell everyone to keep their own score and just turn it in when they are done. Sound familiar?
Since every member of the ata that goes to that White elephant is above reproach, what could go wrong?

This is my favorite story of 3 of these PRO CHEATERS.

Once upon a time there were three well known, in SWPA and WV, shooters that wanted to get a high average in singles, and keep their yardage as low as possible preparing for the "grand". So these 3 "gentlemen" decide they should go to Brook County in WV ,and Washington Sportsmen's in PA and shoot a TON of singles. Sometimes they would shoot at both places in the same day.
One of them actually registered four 100 straights on the same day, in FEBUARY. It can get pretty cold and windy in FEBUARY, but it sure didn't bother this guy. And he had his two running buddies with him, just in case anyone questioned how in the FN world he could run 400 in FEBUARY. BTW, they kept their own score. If you research older posts on this site you can, as they say, read all about it.

Anyway, these guys each recorded THOUSANDS of registered targets in one year. Again, THEY KEPT THEIR OWN SCORE. Singles covered? Check.

Now, to get the caps yardage shortened up all one of them had to do was either turn in a lousy score or, go to some local shoot and take a dive. People might have thought he had a bad day but he had other, bigger plans so he took the ribbing. August was not that far away.

So, to make a longer story shorter, it got longer because the late Glenn Lash got involved as a delegate and both clubs got spanked and the 3 PRO CHEATS had a lot of those fake targets taken away but the shorter version is, one of the three amigos ended up on the 18 yard line where he proceeded to run the 100 and then another 50 in a shoot off to win the friggin GAH. Above reproach huh?

Just an aside to that little story? One of those cheats mentors actually got caught back in the late 70's early 80's out west at a big shoot where he SWITCHED CARDS with short yardage shooter so he could win almost $30,000.00. The hilarious thing was, he stopped to have his picture taken for Trap & Field magazine and it had the other guys name with HIS picture. The late Leo Cerar from Library PA saw the picture and was on the phone with Vandalia in about 30 seconds.

At first the moron that got the check said he wasn't going to give it back but the words "GRAND LARCENY" got his attention. LOL

But I'm sure NO ONE would try and take advantage of a 14 year old kid.

kids are more prone to being intimidated by older people.

 

NOTHING can prevent cheating. But an older scorer can do a better job at stopping it before it gets to the point of giving a cheater a target. More than a 14-year-old KID. And an older person with a rule book in his pocket, won't be intimidated like a 14-year-old KID. So yeah, older people are better scorers.

 

Almost any 14 year old is probably better than some of the older blind toothless meth head scorers that can't add or subtract that they have at other state shoots. If you have ever been there you will know what state I am talking about.

 

I have never seen that.

Fourteen year old scorers are only there to cheapen the product.

You wont find little kids calling losses at a Flyer shoot.

 

frostyman I believe that the quality of the person in the scorers chair matters more than the age of the scorer. Over time I believe that we all have encountered some very efficient young scorers and also have encountered some very poor older scorers. Like the old saying (it's not the size of the dog in the fight it's the size of the fight in the dog that matters). If the cheaters see a weakness in the scorers chair they will try to exploit the opportunity regardless of the age. Just my opinion.

What ID does a 14 year old carry to show their age?

 

i've shot trap 4 times longer than a 14 year old has been alive.
i'll put that talent as a scorer up against a 14 year old any day.
and i still have all my teeth. ive spent good income on more than guns in my life.

 

Who doesn't think we deserve the best scorers possible? The ATA claims $28 million in their slush fund.

 

Maybe if they raise target prices they could afford 16 year olds.
