Do the targets in every event at a large shoot like the Ohio state shoot count toward All America totals? The first day in most state shoots is called preliminary. I was not sure if those targets counted. I have a friend who said he is trying to qualify this season and when I looked up what that entailed the description in the rule book is not terribly clear. TIA

"the description in the rule book is not terribly clear"

That is by current design ..... meaning ..... they make things up in real time to suit any situational needs to help those they favor .....

Gaining favor in the eyes of the self-serving will get much more mileage than trying to understand the paradox book .....

Any ATA targets shot at count toward the minimum target totals needed to make the AA team. Your friend needs to win events in class or category to score points. The bigger the shoot, the more potential for points awarded. I'm not 100% sure what you have to shoot to meet the criteria to make it. I believe you have to shoot championship events in your home state, shoot the grand and your zone? Again I'm not 100% sure on that.

All registered targets except for registered league targets count toward ATA All American team total target requirements however, that does not nessarily mean that a shooter may earn All American points in those events. At an ATA state shoot a maximum of 1300 targets or the final 5 days (usually Wednesday-Sunday) of the shoot are events that shooters can earn All American points. The rules for when points are awarded differ for State Shoots, Satellite Grands, The Grand American and other major tournaments with each having different rules regarding which events shooters may earn points in. For example at a Satellite Grand all events during the final week of the tournament are points qualifying while at shoots falling under the "Other Major Tournament" category (example the Cardinal Classic) points will only be awarded on the championship targets and preliminary events with more than 450 entries.
