Guns of Today vs Yesterday

Somewhat of a rookie here but getting better quick.

My question is --Are the guns of today that much better than the guns of yesterday?

I hear Frank Little was one of the best with a TM1. So why pay more for a TM9?

I am told Bonillas used an MX3 not an unsingle Perazzi.

I think Bonilla's stills shoots a MX-3 and Frank Little shot a BT-99 ... Leo Harrison III made the Remington 1100 famous, was and will probably always be the Biggest Winner ... Its not the gun, the gun is only an excuse ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

 

IMO, since gun fit is probably the most important part of the game all the "new" advancements in adjustable stocks and ribs had to help today's shooters some.
Heck way back in the stone ages, my time shooting registered targets, we couldn't buy those things. It was mole skin or a file and two guys with a spare tire bending the barrel.
You still have to have the talent/ability to shoot great winning scores but today's guns, with the factory options offered, have to had some impact.
Better in that sense? I would say yes

I think its the man behind the gun... but that being said i think the advancement in AMMUNITION is the most important factor.
Todays quality controls and advanced powders are producing a more controled and even pattern than in past loads.

 

No doubt the shells are better than the OLD paper cases with the cardboard wads but since the invention of the plastic shot cup I think the shells are not that big of a factor. UNLESS SOMEONE WANT SO START UP WITH THAT SPEED THING. I don't.

I guess we will have to ask the OP what he had in mind when he was thinking "yesterday's guns. To some younger shooters "yesterday" was the late 70's.

Was talking to a couple of friends today and for giggles where having a OG challenge.... federal paper shells in fixed choke non adjustable guns.... rebuilt my 1968 870tb today, my old model 12 is looking good and 1100 mag is always ready to go....
Forgot how much i miss my play things.

 

There ya go. Rudy Etchen broke 100 straight in doubles at the Grand with his 870. Leo handled that 1100 like a magic wand. And God knows how much money and how many trophies were won over the years by guys that knew how to point their Model 12's.

Three all time great guns.

Terry Zaplata....2 time HOA HAA at the Ohio State Shoot. Shot an 870 for singles and caps. Shot the 1100 for doubles. Finished ahead of that guy Dysinger.

OSTA Hall of Famer Zaplata still shoots shoots the 870 on occasion. Last I saw the tape was a little worn.

Those that know Terry Zaplata know he would have felt honored to point his Remington at a 30 yard target.

I love my 2 main 870 barrels... 30" full and 36"fulllllll
My 1100 fixed chokes are all 30" patterning between improve modified and full
model 12 is modified 28"tube
ithaca 37trap is modified....
so many choices in cabinet

Wow! I did not know he did 500 straight. At 3 hole targets. With an antique gun.

Hand set targets and no voice activation.

A wise fellow told me..."never bet against a guy that only owns one gun regardless of how old it is".

 

Zaplata--500 straight in a day with an 870 on 3 hole targets is uncanny. With an 870?

That's the thing about being around this game for close to 40 years. You got to see those events or hear about them right after it happened. The old land lines were burning up with the news the next day.

People need and make excuses today to make up for their inability's ... Its much easier then putting their nose to the grind stone and work to make it happen ... The game has been dumbed down, some people even use that as an excuse ... WPT ... (YAC) ...

Ask my K-80! Since putting together an old SX-1 with Wenig offset stock she's been abandoned like an ex-wife. Who knows how long our enchantment will last (with the Winchester that is)!

 

Andy, wouldn't it be nice to shoot targets with your SX-1 and not miss a target till it was the guns fault?

I have shot one Gun since the 70's a 1100 & 11-87 same thing. While I have tried other's Gun's, I have never seen a reason to change. I do like seeing the new gun's, who does like good craftsmanship. A person today has many good choices. What I don't think helps with the newer guns is I see people messing with there Ribs & stocks and always adjusting them. A person should have it set for them POI.
Then shoot it and not blame there gun for a poor score. I also new a Doctor who use to buy every new Gun that came out, just to try them and many times his scores went into a slump for a while but to each his own. I have always know where the fault lies when I shoot poorly between my ear's. I do believe today's shell's are better than in the past.

 

50/50 today in a nice breeze today. 97/100 on Thursday evening-some in near dark. Our love affair continues!

Graham barrels made it for Turkey/card shooting.
I do have a 34"that was "updated"before me.... rechoked to mod. and reblued with COLD BLUEING.....***cringes*** i traded a good 30" screw in choke barrel for it because kid was shooting it.... it got wet and blueing came off.
Barrel was also bent to left...
