Has anyone heard anything on where the northwest Ohio zone shoot is going to be held this year? I could find nothing on the Cardinal sites (no surprize) and nothing on the OSTA site! May will be here before long, I hope anyway.

Since Cardinal is in the northeast zone,I think they have to exhaust all options in the northwest zone first (like co-hosting).If they had not moved boundaries when Cardinal was built, they would be in the northwest zone.

The Northwest Zone shoot this year will be co-hosted by two clubs. There are only four clubs in this zone who are certified to throw ATA targets with four or more traps. Blackwing is not one of them. The two hosting clubs will be Williams County Gun Club (in Williams County) and the Newport Sportsmen Club (in Shelby County). This will be our first attempt at co-hosting a zone shoot in this zone. With the closing of Jaqua's has put us in a real bind to get this shoot put together. Our zone had the luxury of using Jaqua's and their 16 trap club for many years. We will now be using two clubs with a total of 8 program traps to run the zone program. Both clubs will start shooting at 9AM on both days. Shooters will have a choice of shooting at either club on either day. These two clubs are located on the extreme ends of the zone. This will give the shooters a choice where they might like to travel. In some cases, both of these clubs will be a new club to various shooters. The program will be in the mail in the near future.

This will be good exposure for 2 fine clubs that will have to pick up the slack left by Jaquas.

I will say that I have seen a LOT of shooters shoot the zone at Jaquas in the past. This could be interesting to say the least.

Smokintom, I agree with you. I am curious what you consider a LOT of shooters? It will be interesting to see how many shooters attend and shoot at these two clubs. In many cases folks will not have to travel as far as in the past. It was always 150 mile round trip each day for me to shoot at Jaqua's. Made the trip many times. The North East zone for many years had one very fine gun club by the name of Great Eastern where there zone shoots were always held. When Great Eastern closed that zone was faced with the same issue we are faced with today in the Northwest zone. As well all know, the number of ATA shooters is down in Ohio. But, the attendance at the zone shoots in the NE zone has increased since they are now using two clubs. So, do you think by using two clubs in the NW zone our attendance will be up, down or stay the same?

I heard Dick is personally serving coffee and doughnuts to the shooters that attend the NW Zone shoot at Newport! Well maybe not, but I do hope that the shooters of NW Ohio and our neighboring States come out to support Newport and Williams County. I thank both clubs for stepping forward and trying to fill the gap left by the closing of Jaqua's.

    Dick,
I really like those cream filled doughnuts with the chocolate frosting on top, but one look at me will tell you that I haven't met many doughnuts that I didn't like.

I hope Laserwizard comes to Newport just so I can see that new stock in person. Pictures look great!

Blackwing is a great club and did throw registered targets some years back. I think they are running a very successful shooting complex without throwing registered trap. One of the nicest clubhouses/pro shops around.

Like you, I don't find many donuts I pass on. I'll have to put Newport in the schedule this year and find our way over there and hope there's a cream filled donut left when we get there.

Looks like it's a 4 hour run one way, but I've got family in Mansfield & Columbus and they all shoot, so this ought to work out pretty good for all of us.

Don, I am not sure I have every seen the type of donut you are describing. I will have to ask the donut god about this type.

Laserwizard, where you coming from. There are four towns in Ohio by the name of Newport. The Newport club is located in Shelby County, just 11 miles west of Sidney, Ohio (exit 92 from I-75). It is a 3.5 hour trip from Newport to Cleveland, 1.5 hours to Cincy and 1.5 hours to Perrysburg. We have a lot of shooters from the SW zone who attend our other ATA shoots. Newport is in the extreme south end of the NW zone. Williams County is in the extreme north end of the NW zone. They are 95 miles apart. It is 95 miles from Newport to Marango.

Blackwing is a super club and offers the shooters in that area a nice place to go burn some powder. Blackwing is not certified to throw ATA registered targets. At one time they were certified. They are located just a few miles from being out of the NW zone on the extreme south east corner of the zone. For those shooters located in the northern part of the zone it would be around a 300 mile round trip each day. This could put a financial burden on some folks when gas is $3.50 per gallon. Also, keep in mind, if you want a chance to make the Ohio State Team, you must shoot your zone shoot. By using Newport and Williams County, it will make it a lot handier for many of the shooters.

I'm coming from Madison, Ohio which is about 45 minutes east of Cleveland.

The Newport club is just North of Dayton right?

Laser, let me give you a better location then "North of Dayton". We are located 30 miles North of where the GRAND was at one time. What's the name of that town, Oh yea, Vandalia!!!! You are almost located in Pennslatucky.

It seems this has turned into a donut thread. I can say that we have arguably the best donuts in the NW zone. We run a small, family owned grocery store here in Carey, OH about 15 miles East of Jaquas called Frederick's IGA. The ladies in the bakery make them fresh everyday. People come from all around the area for them. The ring donuts are $0.60 each, the filled sticks/rolls are $0.70 each, and the nut topped rolls are $0.99 each. A couple of these a day and you will have the trapshooter physique to get you to the 27.

It's a shame that Black Wing, one of the nicest clubs in Central Ohio, is not Trapshooter friendly. They make no bones about it.

However, I guess if you invest 8 million or so in a club you can do whatever you want.

After thoroughly reviewing Doug's pictures, I vote we throw a couple traps behind the Frederick's IGA in Carey, Ohio and have our NW Zone shoot there. Targets might be tough and scores could be low but who would care after a trip to the bakery! And after the shoot there would be an endless supply of my other favorite thing, ICE COLD BEER!!!!! Think the OSTA would sanction that? I bet Willie would be there, at least for the beer part!

Word of warning, don't put up food for prizes at any trap shoot. Dave Berlet is the odds on favorite from the NW zone to win if you do. Those donuts do look good. They'd taste pretty fine out here at TB on a cold day. Brad

Zimmie....while I like Asparagus, your comment was really a downer. I was on a sugar high!!

Brad, I cannot disagree with your observation....Dave would be tough to beat for a doughnut.

Back to the original topic, I know both clubs chosen to host the NW Ohio zone will do everything possible to provide the shooters an enjoyable weekend.

We had a great meeting today at Williams County, one of the host sites for the NW Zone. To update you, contractor is on board to install the new trap 5 field, goal is to have this field ready to roll by our May 9 ATA shoot, a week before the zone. I'm pleased to inform you that this will be the Bob Nester Memorial Field. It will be west of trap 4 and shoot entirely over water.
    Other plans include:
    Additional parking
Computerized shoot with 6 x 8 big screen projector to roll scores
Classification, squading, and cashiering areas in clubhouse
Path through woods directly to new trap 5
    New food vendor

GREAT JOB JOE AND THE GANG UP NORTH. This is going to make a great zone shoot. The guys at Williams County will give you a real down home welcome.

For those of you folks who want to shoot at the Newport Sportsmen Club, there is a very nice state park just four miles from that club. They offer around 150 electric only campsites. Very nice showers etc. Morries Landing restaurant is a nice short walk from the campgrounds. They offer a full menu (there fried chicken and fish dinner is outstanding) starting early in the morning. They also will deliver pizza to your campsite. They also offer super hand dipped ice cream. The name of the state park is LAKE LORAMIE STATE PARK. You can get on line and make your camping reservations. This campgrounds fills up every weekend. Do not just plan on pulling in and getting a campsite.

If anyone has any questions, do not hesitate to PM either Joe or myself. We will do everything we can to make this a great zone shoot for you.

I would suggest both clubs list their address for GPS reasons, and get this info and date on the OSTA website somewhere too. Club phone numbers wouldn't hurt either.

Since many of these shooters are going to a new club for the Zone shoot, some may have to plug in an address, and I would expect them to hit the OSTA website to find it.
