50 targets per trap faster or not?

I see where a major shoot is planning to shoot 50 targets per trap. Will that be faster or more unfair?

It might be faster if there is only one event for the day. If traps need to be switched from singles to doubles it can slow that process down because the target setters need fields empty on both sides to safely and fairly set the doubles. Similar situation if a handicap and singles event are back to back. At many clubs the fields are too close together for long yardage squads to be comfortable shooting with singles squads shooting next to them. Really should wait for the entire line to finish a singles event if a handicap event follows.

 

Why not 100/trap if speed is the answer? I'm sure the "Big Dogs" would love that idea.

 

I’m not certain, but I think one of the larger venues tried 100 per trap. Maybe it was Missouri? I don’t think it was well received. We tried 50 per trap at the Cardinal Center and found it to be slower than using 4 trap banks. In a perfect world where every shooter is at their trap on time, traps never break down, squads always shoot at exactly the same pace and no one calls for a reset, 50 per trap might be better. In the real world those problems exist during every event, especially at larger shoots. Using 2 trap banks makes it difficult for line supervisors to shift gears and send squads to open fields to keep things moving along. If one trap is down you’ve lost 50% of that bank. To really save time using 50 per trap means shooters need to take 2 boxes of shells to the line or shoot 10 per post. Both of those can be very difficult for shooters with less than perfect health or stamina. It’s also not as much fun!

 

Faster than what? 25 per trap, no, 100 per trap, yes.

At some point it simply becomes registered practice. Depending on how traps are assigned and the clubs layout, shooting all 100 on one trap could be a tremendous advantage or disadvantage. I can think of one or two traps at most of the clubs I’ve shot at over the years that have treated me very harshly. I’d certainly wouldn’t want to shoot all 100 on those traps but somebody else might find them to be their favorites. Our Syrian friend that makes the great fattoush salad would probably pay an excavator to remove trap 12D post 5 from the Cardinal Center if he had to shoot a 100 from that trap!

 

Even better than 100 on a single trap shoot all 100 from one post and next even better scenario would be save the ammo and just tell the scorer to write in the score you want.
