EARLY PIOTTI OVER-UNDER SIDE-PLATED BOXLOCK HEAVY GAME SHOTGUN WITH FINE SCROLL ENGRAVING BY A. MUFFOLINI.
SN 5222. (1971) Cal. 12 ga. 2-3/4″ Chambers. 27-1/2″ Mono-bloc bbls are fitted with broad matted ventilated rib. Left side of top bbl is engraved “Wirnhier – Spezial Skeet 68″, and appear to be bored with Tula chokes. Bbls are extra thick for the last 4” toward muzzles. Piotti name is on bottom flat and on action, but does not appear on exterior of action. Low profile coin finished OU action with false sideplates features single non-selective trigger, and non-automatic safety. Action and lockplates are engraved with near full coverage well cut medium sized scroll. Engravers signature “A Muffolini” is on trigger plate. Nicely figured and lightly marbled European walnut round knob pistol grip Monte Carlo buttstock measures 14-1/8″ over brown leather covered pad. Matching full forend has Deeley type release. Bore diameter: top -.729, bottom – .729. Bore restrictions: top – .065 recess then with .025 restriction, bottom – .065 recess then .015 restriction. Wall thickness: top – .029, bottom – .029. Drop at heel: 2-5/8″, drop at rear of Monte Carlo: 2-3/16″, drop at comb: 1-1/2″. Weight: 7 lbs. 12 oz. LOP: 14-1/8″. CONDITION: Excellent, retaining over 90% of all finishes with silvering on high edges of bbls. Wood finish has some scratches and dents. Small wood repair on forend. Bores are fine, with some light scratches toward breech ends. Action is tight. Mechanically fine. Nice leather case with makers label. An interesting high grade Italian shotgun. 7300.00. Jim Veta

Incredible gun Jim. Can't imagine what it would cost today to replicate. Piotti is well known Italian maker.

Engraving just gorgeous ! It might take up to a couple of hundred hours for a master engraver to complete this work of art. If Muffolini, a well known master engraver was paid just 35 dollars an hour the engraving alone is worth the price of the gun ! Hell most machinists make more than $35.00 an hour. When I attended Yavapai Community in Prescott, Arizona there was a professor that taught engraving, I want to say his name was Joe Conforte ( not the brothel owner ) The Joe I knew came from Philadelphia and used to shoot with the Trapshooting Hall of Famer Frank Little. Memory a little froggy after 40 years but here goes. I knew the Engraving instructor from trapshooting, I was the president of the Flagstaff Trap and Skeet Club at that time and Joe would attend some of our trap shoots. I didn't realize what a great engraver he was until he was featured in one of the shooting magazines as the commissioned engraver for Remington to engrave a commemorative shotgun or the one millionth 870 or 1100 ?? When talking to Joe about how his new found notoriety would help his engraving business he said It wouldn't help him because he had all the work he could possibly do. (?) He had two multi millionaire Japanese/ Hawaiian resort owners that he worked for exclusively they supplied him with all the high end guns he could engrave. At that point realizing I was out of my league I had enough sense not to ask how much money did he get per gun.
